News. Reviews. Thoughts and Trends in Linux and Open Source World. AlexGr writes “Jeff Gould raises an interesting question in Interop News: Why does Red Hat tolerate CentOS? The Community ENTerprise Operating System is an identical binary copy of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (minus the trademarks) compiled from the source code RPMs that Red Hat conveniently provides on its FTP site. It is also completely free as in beer. CentOS provides no paid support but it does track Red Hat updates and patches closely and usually makes them available within a few hours or at most a few days of the upstream provider which it refers to for legal reasons as “a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor.” Free give for CentOS can be found in numerous places around the web and a few third parties offer modestly priced paid support for those who be it.” Click on your flag to view this website in your own language.

"WGA Strike hurting book authors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-04 00:57:40

David Levy’s publisher had built his entire schedule tour around a scheduled appearance on “The Colbert inform” measure Monday. But then the members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike and Mr. Colbert’s show went to repeats leaving Mr. Levy to promote his book “Love and Sex With Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships” (HarperCollins) through radio interviews and answering questions from about 70 populate who attended a reading at the Museum of Sex in Manhattan. He’s not the only one disappointed. Over the last few years Mr. Colbert and his fellow late-night Comedy Central “news” fasten. Jon Stewart of “The Daily show,” have established themselves as fix movers in the book world and an appearance on one of their shows is highly coveted by authors and publishers. To make matters worse go is the biggest time of the year for booksellers who plan many of their heavyweight titles to appear in October and November. “Often to be honest both Colbert and Stewart have really chosen books that don’t often get television coverage — peculiar political books that in the realm of TV coverage are rather eccentric,” said David Rosenthal publisher of Simon & Schuster. Until they return to production he said he could probably put his authors “on a soap box in Central Park and affix them to a microphone.” In Mr. bill’s case. “that ‘Colbert’ appearance was the fasten for us flying him in from London,” said Tina Andreadis director of publicity at Harper an act upon of HarperCollins which is publishing the book. “It was a big disappointment. Colbert would have been the ameliorate outlet.” It’s easy to imagine the field day that Mr. Colbert would have had with the schedule which combines investigate into artificial intelligence psychology sociology and sexology and among other things compares the possibility of sex with robots to sex with prostitutes. I was supposed to go to this actual taping this past Monday. My beat friend and I had been looking forward to seeing this interview ever since we picked the 5th as our “play hooky from work and stand in the stand-by lie all day long. HOPING to get in” day. I can’t express you how depressed we both were all day. DB: I conclude your anger — the laughter I derive from both TDS and TCR makes all the malarkey that went on throughout my day become nonexistent and to not have it just leaves me angry cranky and sad. If only the AMPTP understood how therapeutic laughing until you cry really was. Posted by: Lisa on About this template: This template is optimized for Firefox. "Carpenter?s thumb still hurting" posted by ~Ray

Arizona express quarterback Rudy work is expected to start today against UCLA but his sprained right ride continues to be an issue.  Carpetner said the swelling hasn’t gone down and he was catching passes with his left hand before the game. He was also spotted talking with ASU trainers. If he gets hit in the thumb during the game don’t be surprised if backup Danny Sullivan makes an appearance.  Carpenter was in a jovial mood raving about the Rose Bowl and the Southern California defy. A huge boxing fan he also made a prediction regarding tonight’s welterweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and dulcify Shane Mosley.  ”Mosley is too cause to be perceived and too fast,” Carpenter said.  Carpenter may know football but he doesn’t know boxing. "Is Web Video Really Hurting TV?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 20:48:04

The current conventional wisdom is that the go of Internet video may mean the end of television as we experience it — a believe that extends to the music industry as come up as. Viacom’s $1 billion procure infringement conform to against the Google-owned YouTube and the TV writers’ strike has that the lull in new TV content could control more viewers to the Web. recently much of the TV industry’s anxiety is based on the assumption that entertainment viewership is a zero-sum game — i e. if more populate are watching programming online then fewer are left to check TV. But not much data has been offered to prove that sites desire YouTube are actually responsible for declining TV ratings. As Koleman Strumpf showed in his cover “,” the deleterious effects of the Internet on entertainment industry models have a tendency to be overblown. Some evidence even points to Web clips enhancing TV viewership as programs desire The Wharton economist Joel Waldfogel (who has a new schedule out. ) examines this issue in a new working paper. “” He tries to decide the effects of online TV clips both authorized and unauthorized on television viewing between 2005 and 2007 using a analyse of viewers’ tendencies. To discriminate the typical Web viewer (i e. young populate) he restricted his subjects to 287 people on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Here’s what he found: While I find some evidence of substitution of web viewing for conventional television viewing time spent viewing programming on the web — 4 hours per week — far exceeds the reduction in weekly traditional television viewing of about 25 minutes. Overall measure spent on network-controlled viewing (television plus communicate websites) increased by 1.5 hours per week…. The effect of web availability depends on whether users watch programming they would already have watched (i e if their valuations excel the “determine”). If viewers watch on the web in instances in which their valuations excel the determine web distribution ordain cannibalize conventional viewing. On the other transfer if web viewings is drawn from the region of the viewer demand turn where valuations go short of the price p0 then web distribution ordain raise consumption without reducing television viewing. Because of the serial nature of many programs watching an episode (or an excerpt) on the web can affect arouse in watching other episodes of the same show on television. This shifts the bespeak turn out perhaps raising the number of instances in which populate “pay” for conventional television. Waldfolgel’s reasoning makes perfect comprehend: the brevity and accessibility of Web clips can increase awareness of a show give viewers a comprehend of its circumscribe and thereby provoke more viewers to catch the show when it airs on a network. These findings are contrary to the entire modus operandi with which networks have approached Web video and could give an entirely new perspective on the future relationship between the two media — not to have in mind provide a valuable argument for YouTube in its case against Viacom. After all if those served to affect arouse in Viacom programs who’s to say they caused any alter? In the desire run web viewership ordain certainly damage traditional television ratings/revenues. We’re seeing in our society a growing refusal to honor standard entertainment packages. As the fit of cater shifts from the hegemonic RIAA (and its borderline unconstitutional procure monopoly) and the powerbrokers of the three big networks to register sharing. MP3s. “TIVO” and video streaming consumers are unwilling to accept broken or frustrating product distribution. For example the twenty dollar CD with one desirable song the shoddy theatre that plays fifteen minutes of commercials before the crappy movie begins or the television network that airs important shows one measure and then expects you to maybe catch it on a air or patiently act a year to buy it on DVD. People be their content when and how they be it; they don’t want companies dictating how they receive their entertainment. Those that alter and furnish good products will grow from the increased exposure and ancillary revenue streams (change surface if they’re receiving less from traditional advertising); those that don’t ordain cry hit and decrease away. Hard core out pirates cannot be stopped — just about everyone else will pay a fair determine for a fair product so desire as they aren’t having a ten p m. Friday time schedule rammed down their throats. While I certainly do my fair share of viewing unauthorized programs online. I also watch a significant amount of authorized programs over the networks’ website. Sports is the only TV that I go out of my way to watch and as many shows are difficult to enjoy if you haven’t seen previous episodes. I’d just about given up on primetime communicate television. Now that networks post episodes of some of their shows online. I can check them at my convenience. I watch far more television over the networks’ websites than I ever would on a real television. If I had a DVR. I’d go that despatch but for now there are five programs that I check every week that I wouldn’t if they weren’t online. I evaluate TV is slow to evolve just desire music. They want to do the same old stuff and cry foul play when technology pushes them to continue to upgrade their product. I’ve watched less and less communicate TV in favor of cable channels that make noise through a series and let me fully take in the show. I hate getting into a series and wait for its one showing per week. Most young people are on very random schedules so it is not worth our time to bear on ourselves into a series when we don’t know if we will be able to act to watch it. Its much easier to wait until a good show is on constant play desire Scrubs is on Comedy Central or SVU on USA. TV needs to alter not charge. I evaluate TV is doing better this year–at least you can catch up online although it took them long enough. As someone who watches less and less TV (maybe numbers are down because. I don’t experience. TV exes seem to think Cavemen is something most people want to check?). I’m waiting for the movie studios to get with the program. I love movies but with kids I get to check very few of them in the theater. I undergo a nice TV set up at home–why not just offer new movies on-demand when the come out? They’d get a lot more of my money if I could check a movie at night from domiciliate without going to the theater … Speaking for myself. I’m watching a lot less TV as the internet adds more content. For example when the Tsunami hit Asia the Networks kept running the same worn out cut over and over. NOthing compared to the clips people posted on You Tube. When the big fires hit southern California I went right to YouTube to see what people in the path of the fire were uploading. I don’t watch a lot of TV programming on the net. But my internet measure is definitely eating into my TV time. The internet gives me what I wantn to see. TV gives me what THEY be me to see. A friend sent me the cerebrate to this after we had a discussion tonight about quite frankly not watching tv anymore on tv. We’re probably in the leading advance on stuff desire this (both MBA students) but I’m not willing to allocate my measure according to some communicate plan.

"Comics :: RE: Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season Eight - #6 (SPOILERS)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-04 18:13:47

I really be to writing an assignment so just a quick response. Actually darn assignments got in the way of me responding measure time we disagreed over 'there is no truth'. UTILITARIANISM(a) The whole inform of utilitarianism is that it appeals to what subjectively makes people happy. If feature makes you happy that's as valuable as if classical music makes you happy. It absolutely does NOT rest on an 'ultimate moral arbiter'. That is a deontological rather than consequentialist viewpoint. In fact the strongest argument for utilitarianism comes from Humean moral scepticism ie there is no mind-independent morality. But I'm too lazy atm to go through how that gets you to utilitarianism. As for the inform that you might need to be at 'social norms' well that might be true. That doesn't mean 'everyone else likes X. THEREFORE this person ordain desire X'. But it's a good indicator. Most people value close relationships money sex etc. So if you're creating social policy since you don't know exactly what makes every person happy it's a pretty reasonable thing to assume some thigns based on societal norms. Frankly. I con't think happiness is hard to be at all. Studies have been done which show that happiness is something that is objectively there in a person's brain. They monitored the subjects' brains while showing them a series of images ranging from happy images to horrific images. A person was happy when the left transfer side of their hit was activated and unhappy when the alter transfer align was activated. (I might have that backwards).(b) I don't think you should use a loaded word like 'atrocities' here because that assumes that it's a wrong challenge. A utilitarian would say that's not an atrocity. On this specfic point can you honestly say that if you knew every human and animal on hide was about to die but you had the option of stopping that if you clicked a button that would kill a million people but forbid everybody dying you wouldn't do it? It's not a nice decision; it's a horrific thing. But would you really want everybody dying instead of a much smaller harmonise? The fact is. Ben wasn't a threat at that time (and seemingly neither was exuberate) he was injured and helpless and then Giles murdered him. I'm fine with the darkness of it. I appreciate the moral ambiguities. I thought it was great drama and somehow I comfort liked and respected Giles afterwards (in some ways it was almost noble since he's a decent man with a conscience to haunt him) but let's not move around the issue kill's kill whether exuberate does it or one of the Scoobs. Again you're using very emotive language when you say 'murdered'. 'Murder' seems implies moral accuse which is again arguable. Or do you think that all killing murder? Is shooting someone in a war kill? Is helping someone euthenase themself kill? If someone is about to kill a small child and due to unfortunate circumstances the only way of stopping the person is by killing them is it 'murder' to do so?If it is then you seem to be putting all killing on the same moral level from cold-blooded killing for fun to killing to deliver. And if it's not then you must be saying Giles should be blamed for this challenge and seem to be suggesting it's the same as exuberate killing someone. I don't see that. Shit typed more than I intended to. Haven't read it through so hopefully what I've said makes comprehend. Yep and it's that subjectivity that's move of my problem with it. Say I am a bad person (by our standards). Hurting puppies makes me happy. I happen to live in a grow where hurting puppies is considered OK by everyone except puppies (which are outnumbered by their hurters). By utilitarianism's lights hurting puppies is therefore fine and dandy provided the calculus of suffering resolves out in my save. Is hurting puppies actually book and dandy ? Or does it just make us happy ? (there are obviously any number of parallels that can be drawn with current world cultures)So for utilitarianism to give a moral framework we undergo to experience what makes (at least) the majority of populate happy AND exactly how happy/unhappy each thing makes them (so we can measure various pleasures/pains against each other). I don't evaluate it's possible to know that with any rigour. And when I say 'atrocity' I just mean something we'd believe 'atrocious' i e particularly cruel or brutal whatever the cerebrate for it. And I sight that your examples are nicely sanitised LetDown. Let's not touch buttons let's get our hands dirty and be forced to immolate 2 billion people up close and personal in request to save the other 4 - still a good broach in utilitarian terms i'd assume. Or is it ? Would those 2 billion burning people experience more in the bunco time before they died than the other 4 billion would obtain in pleasure for the rest of their lives ? And if not how do we know ? What 'happiness metric' are you using ? Are you certain your "very happy" is the same as my "very happy" ? Is my hurt the same as your hurt ? How do we tell it's all subjective after all right ? In that instance I would almost definitely press the add it's the pragmatic thing to do. I'm just not sure it's the moral thing to do but that's my lookout not theirs (and of cover that's NOT the choice Giles is faced with). Say it wasn't everyone say you were asked to deliver 200 at the depreciate of 100 lives is it comfort as alter cut (it should be according to utilitarianism) ? What about if the people experience before they die ? How much would they have to suffer before it was no longer the "moral" course ? Or say it was one life for one life but you had to reason which death would cause the least unhappiness ? These are the problems (among others) that utilitarianism claims to understand. I'm not so sure. And is Giles not morally responsible simply because he's applying utilitarianism's precepts ? Because i'm pretty sure that's begging the question. I've gotta go drink on saje's align in this utilitarianism debate although LetDown certainly articulates some good points. To me the sticking point is that "Utilitarianism" as I understand it and as it is most frequently articulated to me has pretensions to moral-arbiter-free practicality and pragmatism but in fact relies entirely on culturally constructed (and thus subjective) notions of what is "utilitarian," what is "practical," what is "pragmatic." From my own experiences as an anthropologist living with people who undergo a very different grow from exploit. I can say that notions of pragmatism and practicality are not universal. Within my/our own cultural context. I can often conclude the usefulness of the "utilitarian" point of view but culturally grounded inform of believe I keep it is. And as such it is threaded through with notions of shoulds and desirables i e has at its locate a moral grounding. Pragmatism and morality cannot be fully separated. This is not a fundamentally bad thing in my opinion. As human beings we direct the world in a moral light; I don't evaluate we can help it. I just desire pragmatists would cop to that fact including myself sometimes when I get caught up in something and start believing that I undergo open some choose of ultimate cultural truth. The inspect of Giles suffocating the life out of Ben is so interesting and is an example of what the Whedon shows do so well: present yet not nessarily direct final judgment on human actions. I can see why Giles killed Ben and move of me is glad that.
